Aerial view of West Island (Lighthouse Island) in the chain of Huron Islands. Look close and you can see the Lighthouse and Assistant Keepers Building in the center of the island on its highest point. The dock and the Boathouse can be seen in the small bay on the left side of the island in the center of the picture. A foot path extends from the boat house up to the Lighthouse and then to the Fog Signal Building at the far end of the island.

The Assistant Light Keepers quarters. Was used to house the assistant keeper and his family and is located adjacent to the Lighthouse.

The Fog Signal Building located at the north end of the island. Used a steam driven fog horn to warn ships of the dangerous islands during times of low visibility.

Spectacular views of Lake Superior, the Huron Mountains, Point Abbaye, the chain of Huron Islands, Keweenaw Bay and the Keweenaw Peninsula exist all along the hiking trail.

Evidence of the last ice age exist all over the island in the form of deep grooves scoured into the rock by glaciers that passed over this area tens of thousands of years ago.

Many of the Great Lake lighthouses of old, had trams to bring supplies up from the lake to the lighthouse. The small gauge railroad tram and turnstyle, located on West Huron Island to bring supplies up from Lake Superior, is believed to be the last remaining tram and turnstyle system remaining on the great lakes. Efforts are being made to clear the trees and brush encroaching on the system.

On a return trip from the Huron Islands on August 27th, 2020 we happened upon this Russian sailing vessel between Point Abbaye and the Huron Islands. This ship sailed from Russia, up the Saint Lawrence Seaway into Lake Superior on its way to Duluth, MN.
